Greg & Robyn Hughes "We were really happy in Sydney, we had great friends, attended a great church, the girls were in a great private school and we had built and were living in our dream home. We also had our own business that had been successfully established in Sydney for 14 years. Friends of ours had moved to Outback Queensland a number of years before and we had planned on going to visit them for the 2003 April school holidays. It was in the planning of this holiday that we believed that instead of just visiting Longreach, we should just move there. Whilst life was good in Sydney we wanted to use an opportunity to make a difference. Prior to leaving for our holiday/new home we put our house and business on the market. We visited our friends in Longreach for two weeks in April 2003 and couldn’t wait until we could move permanently, we just loved it. Our house sold whilst we were away and our business sold shortly afterward. By July 2003 we were living in Longreach." | Greg & Robyn Hughes, former Sydney residents, moved to Outback Queensland in 2003 |
"The transition has probably been easier than we thought. Robyn and I very quickly found work and the girls all settled well into their new school. I am now the Chaplain at the local high school and I have also established an on-line automotive spares business. You can now live anywhere in the world and phone your work in." "The girls love the freedom and opportunities they have had here. Our eldest daughter finished year 12 last year and is now working in information technology at the hospital. Our second daughter is currently doing year 11, has a part time job and has a school based traineeship with Allied Health. Our third daughter who is 13 also has a part time job. The lifestyle is relaxed, the people are lovely, and we feel such a sense of community here. It has been a completely positive experience for us." After two years working in Brisbane, including a five-month stint in town planning for the Brisbane City Council where he wrote his thesis on the ‘Economic Analysis of Urban Consolidation in Brisbane’, he started work as the Finance Officer for the Barcoo Shire, based in Jundah. Boris was attracted to Australia and the Central West for the wide-open spaces and friendly people. He enjoys his life in Jundah and work is busy and interesting. This new adventure is different to anything Boris has experienced in the past. | |
